Power Master Wiki:Editing Help

From Power Master Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

This page is meant to help editors with certain tasks and page building. For a full list of help pages, see Category:Power Master Wiki.

Formatting

• Italics: Names of games and publications should be italicized to make it clear that what the reader is reading is the name of a game/book. This is done by placing apostrophes on both sides of a title. For example, Power Master 1: A Strange Journey will become Power Master 1: A Strange Journey. Fictional game names created in the games themselves, as in names of games that do not actually exist, are instead placed in quotation marks.
• Bolding: The first instance of a subject in an article should be bolded. If a character's full name is not used at the beginning of an article, but is used in the Biography section, the full name there is also bolded. Bolding is done by placing three apostrophes on both sides of a subject. For example, Stephan will become Stephan. Bolding can also be done by linking to the article being edited, this should be avoided. Placing five apostrophes around a subject will both italicize and bold it.
• Linking: The standard way to move from page to page. Placing two square brackets on both sides of a subject, left side brackets being opening and right side being closing, will create a link. For example, link. If the link leads to a created page, it will turn blue. If the page does not exist, the link will be red and is asking to be created. A link should be used for the first instance of a subject on a page or section.
• Redirects: A redirect is created by typing #redirect page name as the only thing on the article. They are meant to bring readers familiar with an outdated name to a more recent one or a shortened name to a full title. For example, see Power Master 1. Redirects will be created automatically when moving pages, though administrators can skip redirect creation altogether. Linking to redirects is discouraged, it is better to use display name instead when necessary. This is not outright banned, though, so linking to redirected names where they are relevant is acceptable, just not preferred. Any non-mainspace redirects should be deleted.
• Disambiguations: A disambiguation is a guiding list of subjects that share the same name. For example: Aora. Linking to disambiguations should be avoided outright, instead linking to the proper subject. They are mainly meant to help with searching.
• Creating disambiguations: Everything has some way to distinguish itself from something else. Nothing should take priority, even if a major character shares their name with a minor character.
• Spelling: As an English wiki, this wiki uses English spelling. "Color" instead of "colour", "armor" instead of "armour", etc. unless specified otherwise.
• Contractions: Contractions such as didn't, isn't, won't, etc. are discouraged as they are not professional in writing. Use did not, is not, will not, etc. instead.
• Game names: Abbreviating game names are fine, so long as the full title is mentioned at the start of its article and when linking to its page. Categories also use game abbreviations to make categorization quicker.
• Images: Files should have a name that is clear. A "game-subject-type" style is recommended, such as "File:PM1 Stephan Enemy Sprite.png", but as long as the name is clear, it does not matter what is used in what order. If the name is too general, such as "File:Stephan.png", it should be renamed so it can accurately describe what the file is. Names should not be a string of numbers or letters. Extensions should be lowercase, such as "png", and "jpeg" should be "jpg"; a limitation of the MediaWiki software is that it cannot read "PNG" as "png" or "jpeg" as "jpg", so consistency is helpful.
• Good quality is also required, as best as possible. Do not turn a jpg into a png just to remove the background, as that bloats the file size and tends to leave artifacts, not to mention it ruins the authenticity of the image. Images should also not be bloated or upscaled, they should be uploaded at the size they are available in. If you are not able to provide the best quality possible, tag the image with quality and someone else may be able to.
• Minor edits: If you have an account, you are capable of marking edits as minor. This should typically be done for edits that don't have a big impact on the content, such as spelling or link fixes. You can mark edits as minor by clicking the checkbox that reads "This is a minor edit" over the save button.
